I have a lot of respect for Charles Krauthammer, an MD (psychiatry), a law degree, a Pulitzer Prize winner and one of the top three conservative political thinkers today. All that as a paraplegic. Clearly he is the embodiment of the phrase that I strongly believe in: “Mind over Matter.” I find myself agreeing with him 90% of the time, and when I do not, as many times he is right and I am wrong. He’s a brilliant and impressive man.

Which is why it is so shocking for me to hear him say that following Obama’s first presidential win in 2008, he was still not sure if Obama was a centrist politician who throws a bone to the left from time to time, or a leftie who throws a bone to the center from time to time. This is more or less a quote from him. He goes on to describe a dinner he had with very few other conservative thinkers with Obama after he was elected, prior to the inauguration. At the end of the dinner, he still could not tell.

That is shocking to me. I have enough witnesses to confirm that I did KNOW what Obama is like, not after he was elected, but within weeks of the start of his campaign. I knew then that he is an ideologue, a zealot for his cause, and a committed socialist and isolationist.

Why did I know that and such a brilliant man did not?

My only explanation is that having lived in other countries and seeing other political cultures, I am more attuned to ideologues who do not hesitate to lie to promote their vision. I think it was hard, even for such a brilliant man like Krauthammer, to accept that the president of the US is a liar.

I know that the use of the word “liar” in the American discourse is considered a “four letter word.” The use of it in the context of the president is UNHEARD of. It is so disrespectful to the presidency, to the country. In this case, however, I unhesitatingly and boldly stand by what I say—the president is a liar and he is the one who brings shame to the presidency, not me for calling a spade a shovel.

It is hard for Americans, even sophisticated ones and brilliant ones, to accept that. However, Obama is an ideologue, and for him the goal justifies the means!
